Online - General District Court
Most traffic tickets issued in Virginia are handled by the General District Court. Always pay special attention to the paperwork you receive as it will tell you how and where to make your payment. If your ticket or fine is payable to the General District Court, you may be able to pay online through the Virginia Judicial System website.
If you have questions, contact the General District Court.
Circuit Court Costs, Fines, & Restitution Payment Information
Court costs, fines, and restitution are due when the court pronounces judgment. The total amount of court costs and fines owed is docketed as a judgment in the circuit court clerk's office if you do not pay the day of court. This judgment is a lien on real estate you own in Hanover County. Unpaid court costs, fines and restitution are also reported to the Virginia Department of Taxation for Set-off Debt Collection, so your state tax refund or lottery winnings may be sent to the clerk's office to pay your court debt.
Delinquent accounts accrue interest and are reported to the Virginia Department of Taxation which acts as the debt collector for Hanover County Circuit Court. When that is done an additional 1-time 17% collection fee is added to the amount you owe.
If you cannot make full payment within 30 days you must make an installment payment agreement at the Circuit Court Clerk's Office to avoid having interest accrue on the money owed for court costs and fines, and your account may be referred to the Department of Taxation for collections. Installment Payment Agreement Guidelines (PDF), Rule 1-24 (PDF), and the Virginia Code §19.2-354 page. The Circuit Court Clerk's Office accepts payment of court costs, fines and restitution made in person, by mail, or through the Circuit Court Online Payment System.
